Mitsubishi Electric Corporation Announces New Solar Cell Record. The specialists of this company managed to obtain a record high efficiency of converting solar energy into electricity – 18.6%, using an element made of polycrystalline silicon. This is 0.6% more than the previous record, which, by the way, belonged to the same company.
It has been known for a long time that the hopes of the energy industry of the future are connected with solar panels. However, the spread of technology is hampered by a number of obstacles, not the least of which is the relatively low conversion efficiency, which negatively affects the cost of the generated energy. At the same time, for the manufacture of solar cells from crystalline silicon, a material is needed, which is already in great demand. This is why developers are focusing their efforts on improving conversion efficiency and creating elements from thinner plates.
In the case of Mitsubishi Electric’s latest development, the key to success was the use of a surface texture with a low reflectivity and optimization of the p-n-junction structure, which allowed to increase the generated current. In addition, due to a new process of applying conductors to the surface of the plate, it was possible to reduce the losses associated with shading of the element by these electrodes by 25%. In the illustration, the new element is shown on the left. On the right, for comparison, an element with a higher reflectivity, thicker conductors and a more pronounced crystal structure is shown.
Mitsubishi Electric plans to start serial production of solar panels, which will use the above developments, in 2021-2021.
