In addition to superconductors, scientists have discovered “superinsulators” – a revolution in electronics is brewing?

The word “super insulator” may sound like a marketing name for an insulating material, but in fact, this is a new fundamental state of matter discovered by scientists at Argonne National Laboratory in collaboration with several European institutions. This discovery sets new directions in the study of solid state physics and may serve as a prerequisite for the emergence of a new generation of microelectronic devices. The work was based on studies carried out at the Novosibirsk Institute of Semiconductor Physics and the University of Regensburg.

A team of researchers created a thin film of titanium nitride that was cooled to near absolute zero. When scientists tried to conduct a current through this material, they found that at temperatures below a certain threshold, the resistance increased by 100,000 times. A similar effect was obtained with a decrease in the external magnetic field. Thus, the substance acquired the properties of a “super-insulator”.

“Superinsulators” could find applications in many areas, such as electronic circuits, sensors and batteries. Let’s say the discharge of a battery due to imperfect insulation leads to a natural decrease in its charge over time. In such cases, a “super-insulator” could prevent the discharge and hold the charge for as long as desired, just as a superconductor allows the current to be maintained.

Interestingly, the aforementioned titanium nitride is a superconductor. According to scientists, the material becomes a superconductor or “superinsulator” when cooled, depending on the thickness of the film.

Over time, scientists expect to learn how to create superconducting “wires” in isolation from a “super insulator”. Such a structure would be the optimal conductive channel, in which there are practically no heat losses of energy. This would allegedly open up new perspectives in microelectronics.
