When processor manufacturers ran into power and heat dissipation constraints, the race for gigahertz was replaced by a race for the number of cores. The frequency “ceiling” of modern processors is limited to gigahertz units. However, the researchers have ideas on how to further increase the speed of processors: “terahertz computers” may become a reality if a number of technical problems can be solved.
These are based on the use of not electrical signals for processing and transmitting information, but light from the far infrared region of the spectrum, which is known as terahertz radiation. Researchers from the University of Utah recently succeeded in creating the equivalent of the conductors in which it circulates.
Under test conditions, scientists were able to provide information transfer at a frequency of 300 GHz, which is slightly lower than terahertz, but significantly exceeds the capabilities of modern commercial developments. At the same time, we recall that we are talking only about “wires” for high-speed circuits. A huge amount of work lies ahead related to the creation of transistors, switches, modulators and other components necessary to build a device of practical value.
At the same time, scientists allot ten years to transfer research into a commercial channel – in other words, a significant increase in clock frequencies is expected quite soon.
