Poll shows lack of interest in Blu-ray
While HD video enthusiasts were hoping for rapid growth in Blu-ray hardware sales following Toshiba’s refusal to promote HD DVD, a recent study by market research firm Harris Interactive showed that the hopes were fragile. Simply put, the Blu-ray technology proposed by Sony, although formally won the so-called “format war”, consumer interest in it is very limited.
The Harris Poll survey of 2,529 US adults found the following:
- Owners of conventional DVD players are overwhelming – 87%;
- The number of owners of equipment that support other media is very small and roughly evenly split between Blu-ray and HD DVD; in turn, about half of the equipment with support for Blu-ray is made up of Sony PlayStation 3 consoles;
- Only 9% of regular player owners are considering buying a Blu-ray-enabled model within the next year, even though they are aware that Blu-ray is considered the next generation of optical disc technology;
- Two-thirds of consumers are aware of the format war; about seven out of ten respondents were able to say that the winner of this confrontation is considered to be Blu-ray;
- Approximately one in four (23%) of those who knew about the “format war” said that they postponed the purchase until it was over;
- Although 35% of respondents have a high definition display device, only 14% are considering buying a Blu-ray player;
- Currently, only 1 in 10 HDTV owners own a Blu-ray player.
According to analysts, the main reason limiting interest in the new generation format is the high price of equipment. As for potential buyers of Blu-ray-enabled equipment, most of them are planning to buy a Sony PlayStation 3 game console.
Interestingly, the survey showed a high degree of loyalty to the choice made by the owners of HD-DVD players. About half (45%) of those who prefer this format intend to continue to use the purchased equipment and buy HD DVD discs as long as they are available for sale. Only 15% of owners of HD DVD players plan to buy a Blu-ray player in the future (it is interesting that the remaining 40% responded to the survey organizers?).
