Intel Developer Forum: Day 0, Focus on Networking
Ahead of the Intel Developer Forum to be held April 2-3 in Shanghai, Intel held a briefing on mobile research, Intel Capital and Intel R&D in China.
Substantial attention was paid to two aspects: mobile PCs and new technologies in the field of wireless communication. If the first question is almost the main topic of the entire IDF, then we can dwell on the second in more detail now.
Developers talk about Intel’s success in developing low-cost digital multi-band transceivers. In the future, this technology will allow the creation of compact devices that support many wireless radio standards with just one chip, which will consume much less power than today’s bulky analog transceivers. Two prototypes were demonstrated at the presentation:
- Intel’s Mobile Wireless Group prototype is a multiband, energy efficient CMOS transceiver that incorporates Intel’s digital wireless radio research. This is an important step towards a fully digital multi-band radio system.
- Power amplifier and ADC with spectrum analyzer developed by Intel researchers who continue to work on product prototypes to bring Intel wireless innovations to life.
After a briefing on mobile systems, the participants of the IDF Forum were shown the results of nine new Intel projects in this direction. Topics range from wireless sharing and display to energy efficient telecommunications and location-based services. Let’s highlight the main:
- Cliffside is the codename for a new technology developed by the Mobile Products Group that allows a single Wi-Fi adapter to act as two independent Wi-Fi adapters. With this technology, users of systems based on Intel Centrino processor technology can simultaneously connect to a wireless local area network (base station) and at the same time establish a direct connection via a Wi-Fi Personal Area Network (Wi-Fi PAN) between laptop and up to 8 different Wi-Fi devices. In this case, the laptop acts as a base station.
- Discovering and Configuring Wireless Devices. New technology makes it easier to discover and configure wireless devices. At the IDF Forum, it was demonstrated how easy it is to identify the presence of nearby wireless displays and establish a secure connection with them. Thanks to the new technology, a well-known interface can be used to select the required closest device to be automatically identified and connected.
- Context-Aware Technology. Developed by Intel’s Software Research Group, this new technology will simplify settings for connecting to a growing range of wireless devices. It is assumed to use a contextual mechanism that provides information about the device of systems and rules set by the user for automatic configuration of the surrounding computing environment. Choosing the right context ensures that connections and interfaces are configured according to user needs.
