Former Microsoft executive lent the world’s first mechanical computer to the Computer History Museum

English mathematician Charles Babbage is considered to be the inventor of the first computing machine. Unfortunately, the originals of his brainchildren have not survived to this day – some of them were never built during the life of the inventor. In 1991, according to Babbage’s drawings, until recently, the world’s only working sample of a mechanical computer was manufactured, which is included in the exposition of the London Museum of the History of Science.

Residents of the New World will soon be able to familiarize themselves with the second copy of the unique exhibit. The computer was assembled in London by order of the millionaire Nathan Myhrvold. (Nathan Myhrvold), one of the former Microsoft executives, who agreed to put the device at the disposal of the Computer History Museum in California for six months. Recall that this museum, located in the famous Silicon Valley, has been collecting, organizing and showing the public the most interesting examples of computer technology for 25 years. Last year, the museum acquired the largest batch of exhibits in its history for a quarter of a million dollars.

The computing machine (more precisely, the “big difference machine”) consists of approximately 8000 parts. Museum visitors will be able to see the device starting May 10.
