Phoenix processor consumes 30,000 times less sleep power than comparable models
Experts from the University of Michigan have developed a microprocessor that consumes 30,000 less energy in sleep mode and 10 times less energy in active mode than comparable models on the market.
The processor was named Phoenix. In sleep mode, its power consumption is 30 pW (picowatt is one trillionth of a watt). Theoretically, with this consumption, a conventional watch battery would last for 263 years of operation.
An important feature of the processor is the ability to power from a microscopic battery comparable in size to the processor crystal itself, which occupies an area of the order of one square millimeter.
Experts believe that the main area of application of the development is sensors that are used in implants, security systems and means of monitoring the environment.
The power consumption was reduced by adapting the circuits to the supply voltage reduced to 0.5 V. By comparison, a low-power Intel Atom processor is powered by a 1.1V voltage source.
The scenario for a typical use of the processor looks like this: by default, it is in sleep mode, automatically “waking up” every programmed time interval to poll the sensors, analyze and save the information received, and go back to deep sleep.
