The peak performance of SKIF MGU, built on the basis of 625 blades manufactured by T-Platforms with 1250 quad-core Intel Xeon E5472 processors, amounted to 60 trillion operations per second (TFlops). The actual system performance in the Linpack test was 78.4% of the peak (47.04TFlops), which was the best indicator of efficiency among all systems in the first hundred of the Top500 list of the most powerful computers in the world based on quad-core Intel Xeon processors. The real performance of the SKIF MSU supercomputer corresponds to the 22nd position of the current world Top500 rating, which is currently an absolute record for Russia. SKIF MSU is also the seventh most powerful supercomputer used in the world education system.
The supercomputer is based on T-Blade blades manufactured by T-Platforms, which can accommodate 20 Intel Xeon quad-core processors with a frequency of 3 GHz based on 45 nm process technology in a chassis with a height of only 5U and provide the highest computational density of any blade Intel-based solutions. These are the first blade solutions in the industry to integrate support for the new Intel 5400 chipset, delivering up to 30% performance gain in real-world applications and support for the next generation of Intel processors. T-Blades are also compatible with any standard interconnect and other external devices thanks to PCI-Express 2 expansion slot.0. Innovative software developments of the IPS RAS and SRCC MSU (OpenTS and X-Com) will significantly simplify the development of parallel applications and organize distributed computing using heterogeneous computing resources.
SKIF MGU is a complete balanced solution that includes a data storage system with a parallel file system T-Platforms ReadyStorage ActiveScale Cluster with a capacity of 60 TB, a tape backup system, a dedicated monitoring and control subsystem with redundancy, a complex uninterruptible power supply and cooling subsystem with a redundancy level N + 1. The parameters and composition of all subsystems are selected in such a way as to ensure maximum efficiency in the execution of custom applications. So, the system contains computing nodes with different amounts of memory and disk space for the most productive work of various applications with individual resource requirements. Most of the compute nodes do not contain hard drives, which improves system fault tolerance. Diskless OS boot, in turn, simplifies administration: for any updates, it is enough to change only a single OS image on the managing node.
The total power consumption of the supercomputer in standard mode is 520 kW and can reach 720 kW at theoretically possible peak load. All this power is concentrated in an area of less than 100 m2, while the temperature in the supercomputer center does not exceed 20 ° C. To remove heat, T-Platforms engineers designed a modular cooling system with a sealed hot aisle between racks with computing nodes. The solution guarantees the removal of up to 30 kW of thermal energy from each rack, has a redundancy level of all components N + 1 and, in an emergency, maintains the temperature regime in the room for at least 10 minutes.
