Some manufacturers believe the “optical format war” is over too soon

When the format war ended with the departure of HD DVDs, some felt that manufacturers would now actively push for Blu-ray-enabled products. Meanwhile, despite Sony’s efforts to attract consumers with the new format’s capabilities, companies such as Samsung and LG have been slow to be active.

As a reminder, the first Samsung products with Blu-ray support appeared three years ago, in 2021. Since then, there have been several announcements and several prototypes shown. Samsung’s overall strategy was to maintain its image as a major manufacturer, for which the company decided to enter the market with a recorder rather than a read-only device. Observers believed Samsung had a good chance of gaining a strong foothold in the new market. We now know that most of the prototypes shown never made it to the serial production stage, and Samsung has no plans for an immediate and massive injection of funds into the production of devices with Blu-ray support. The company’s position was expressed in an interview with the Korean Times in the following words: “At the moment, we do not consider the revitalization of the business [related to Blu-ray], despite the success in the format war.”.

Another Samsung spokesman said the reason for this behavior could be found in the war itself. As it ended earlier than expected, Blu-ray hardware makers are unlikely to ramp up investment as they fear low margins.

Like Samsung, LG seems to have taken a wait-and-see attitude. After showing the first pieces of equipment in 2021, in 2021 it released a hybrid player capable of playing Blu-ray and HD DVD discs.

“Globally, the potential Blu-ray disc market is very attractive. Consumers are ready to spend 1.1 billion this year. Doll. to discs with high-definition recordings, which is more than 300 million. dollars spent last year. However, this business is still in its infancy due to high prices and the proliferation of high-speed Internet access, ”said an LG spokesman.
