Epson Announces High Resolution 3D Display
Seiko Epson Corporation (Epson) has developed a high-resolution autostereoscopic 3D LCD (QVGA analog) that allows you to view 3D images from more angles than traditional 3D displays without the need for special glasses.
There is an increasing need in the gaming and film industries to use 3D images that are more immersive and more impactful to the viewer than traditional 2D images. However, today’s 3D displays offer a limited viewing area and provide low resolution.
Epson 3D displays are multi-view systems. Such systems allow you to obtain a high quality 3D image due to the fact that the visible part of the image changes depending on the position of the viewer’s head. To enhance the effect of depth in stereoscopic 3D images, design engineers can increase the number of angles so that the image can be viewed from different angles. Previously, however, an increase in the number of angles led to a decrease in resolution, since only a certain number of pixels can be accommodated on the LCD.
Traditional multi-view displays typically use stepped lenses (a vertical array of cylindrical lenses that define swath widths versus refraction) that are designed for a swath width of 62 to 65 mm, which is the distance between the eyes of the average person. Epson engineers threw away the experience of traditional manufacturing, in which it is assumed that the optimal width of the swath is equal to the distance between the eyes, deciding to reduce its width to 31-32.5 mm. Now the swath width is half the distance between the eyes of a person, and thanks to some additional improvements to prevent the reduction of resolution and enhance the 3D effect, Epson has managed to create a display capable of displaying crisp, bright, high-quality 3D images.
Images on conventional three-dimensional displays with a swath of 62 to 65 mm, when viewed from a certain position, can be displayed distorted and inconvenient for perception, since human eyes can perceive the image on different halves of the display as two-dimensional. By optimizing the span, Epson displays reduce the appearance of 2D images and display lifelike 3D images that can be viewed from multiple angles.
The viewer’s left eye sees image 6 and the right eye sees image 4. Both images are processed by the human brain, due to which he perceives already a three-dimensional image. If the viewer moves his head or changes position relative to the display, the visible image changes so that the viewer sees a different volumetric image. For example, the three-dimensional image perceived by the viewer when his left eye looks at image 7 and his right eye at image 5 is different from the image that he perceives if his eyes look at images 6 and 4.
To solve the problem of loss of resolution on multi-view displays, Epson uses a special image processing technology – “stepping three-dimensional pixel array”, which takes into account the sensitivity of the human eye to a decrease in resolution in the horizontal direction. Epson has been able to reduce the amount of horizontal reduction in resolution, which improves the quality of the 3D image and makes it clearer and more vivid.
