Illinois Scientists Create “Extremely Flexible Circuits”
A team of researchers at the University of Illinois, located in Urbana-Champaign (remember, this university was one of two institutions in which research centers will be created with funds from Microsoft and Intel), managed to create the first “fully integrated, extremely flexible circuit.”. The group was led by Professor John Rogers.
Project participants anchored a 1.5-micron silicon electronic circuit (50 times thinner than a human hair) on a pre-stretched rubber backing. Due to this, it was possible to provide the product with the possibility of deformation that does not impair its performance. If we consider the resulting structure with a high magnification, it looks like an accordion that can be stretched and twisted. It is this special micro-texture that provides the unusual flexibility that allows you to bypass the limitations inherent in traditional microcircuits made of hard and brittle silicon.
