KDDI Demonstrates 1 Gbps IR Transmission
At Wireless Japan 2021, the Japanese corporation KDDI showcased its development called Giga-IR in action. This name hides an infrared (IR) interface that provides data exchange at a speed of 1 Gbit / s.
The Giga-IR is expected to be used to transfer multimedia data between cell phones, PCs, TVs, DVD recorders, printers and other devices.
Initially, the development was called EFIR (extremely fast infrared communication). The KDDI company that developed the interface standardizes it in the IrDA (Infrared Data Association). Completion of the process is expected in March 2021.
Unlike most IR interfaces that use LEDs, the Giga-IR uses semiconductor lasers. According to the company, the dimensions of the Giga-IR communication modules can be made comparable to those of other IR modules. The same applies to the price, of course, subject to the development of the mass production of modules.
The laser used in the Giga-IR does not require precise mutual positioning of the devices, since the viewing angle is about 10 °. The output power is in units of mW, which corresponds to the class 1 safety class. It makes it harmless to accidentally hit the laser beam in the eye.
