MIT Researchers Improve Solar Cells. The soon-to-be-launched products are said to be significantly cheaper and more efficient than the designs available today. According to one MIT expert, by 2021 solar panels will be comparable in price to the electricity they generate with coal.
The institute employees founded an enterprise called 1366 Technologies, the goal of which is to commercialize the development. Currently, a production facility is under construction for a pilot production of the first batch of batteries. According to published data, the conversion efficiency of new batteries is 19.5%. This is noticeably higher than the 15% figure achieved in batteries produced in series today. In terms of the cost of electricity received, the new batteries are 27% higher than the existing ones.
The batteries that 1366 Technologies will manufacture are made of polycrystalline silicon, a material that is generally less efficient than monocrystalline silicon, but also cheaper.
One of the key innovations that has improved conversion efficiency is the special surface texture of the batteries, which reduces light reflection. Previously, such a texture was difficult to obtain from polycrystalline silicon, but MIT specialists managed to circumvent the limitations.
