Belgian scientists needed four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 boards to create a supercomputer
Researchers at the University of Antwerp create a supercomputer based on four NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 video adapters. The price of the system turned out to be less than 4,000 euros, but in terms of performance it is comparable to a cluster of hundreds of PCs.
The supercomputer is used by the ASTRA research group, whose task is to develop computational tomography methods. Group members estimate eight NVIDIA GPUs deliver more performance than 300 Intel Core 2 Duo processors running at 2.4GHz. The new system solves problems faster and consumes much less energy than a supercomputer cluster.
To build the system, which received the designation FASTRA, the AMD platform was chosen, since scientists could not find an Intel motherboard capable of accepting four GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. Interestingly, SLI technology is not used as no interaction between GPUs is required. Instead, applications use the NVIDIA CUDA programming model, which allows all eight GPUs to run in parallel.
System technical data:
- Mainboard – MSI K9A2 Platinum;
- Processor – AMD Phenom 9850; cooler — Scythe Infinity;
- Memory – 4x 2GB Corsair Twinx DDR2 PC6400;
- Video cards – 4x MSI 9800GX2;
- Winchester – Samsung Spinpoint F1, 750 GB;
- Power supply – ThermalTake Toughpower, 1500 W;
- Case – Lian-Li PC-P80 Armorsuit.
Works supercomputer running 64-bit version of Windows XP.
The biggest challenge faced by the creators of the system was cooling four graphics cards. To lower the GPU temperature, I had to remove the side panel of the case. In idle mode, the temperature is 55 ° C, at full load it rises to 86 ° C, and in the case of an increase in the frequency of the shader unit by 20% above the nominal value – up to 100 ° C.
The lower illustration allows you to evaluate the capabilities of FASTRA, which shows the time spent on the reconstruction of one image according to the data obtained from the tomograph. The upper value corresponds to GPU operation at an increased frequency, the middle value – to normal operation, and the lower value is the indicator of the CalcUA supercomputer, consisting of 256 nodes on AMD Opteron 250 processors (2.4 GHz), the purchase of which in March 2021 cost the university 3, 5 million. Euro.
