OLPC Project Changes Organization and Leadership
Nonprofit One Laptop Per Child Project
(OLPC), which laid the foundations for the emergence and growth of the compact
and Affordable Mobile Computers (OLPC XO), announced last Friday the appointment of a new leader. New president and executive appointed
director of the company.
Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the company, has long conceived
reorganization and restoration of order. The main persons changed every now and then – recently
Mr. Bender left the company, about which
we already informed.
The change in management is expected to allow for
order and start reviving the project. Over the past few months have left the company: CTO Mary Lou Jepsen, Ivan Krstic
and Walter Bender. Curiously, Mary Lou Jepsen began commercializing the key elements (battery, XO screen) of the project, and
Ivan Kirstich and Walter Bender opposed radical change at OLPC and
use of open source software.
Now OLPC has as many as 4 departments: development, technology, development and training. The organization will also be engaged in promoting XO, more focused on the end user. Reports that XO will become a dual-boot PC have also been confirmed – negotiations are underway with Microsoft to use its “stripped-down” version of Windows XP in XO.
Previously developed Sugar UI has been criticized by Negroponte and will be replaced by Windows.
As part of the reorganization, Charles Kane will leave his CFO position and take over organizational matters
charged with establishing links with new partners and
government organizations. This was announced by Negroponte in his interview
resource PCWorld. Himself
he will promote his project among government
organizations around the world and fundraising for its development.
