45nm Phenom in tests versus 65nm Phenom in overclocked and at nominal frequencies

The Chinese resource Hardspell has published a rather detailed review of the 45nm Phenom X4 processor on the Deneb core. Recall that earlier we could already see the results of tests of engineering samples of this CPU in SuperPI, as well as practical measurements of the power consumption of systems based on it.

Now the performance of Deneb (2.3 GHz nominal frequency, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache) has been measured in a number of applications in popular tests.

For the tests, we used the MSI K9A2 Platinum board, fortunately, when moving from a 65-nm core to a 45-nm core, AMD decided to keep the Socket AM2 connector+. Also used 2 GB DDR2-800 from Corsair and a graphics accelerator Radeon HD 4850.Testing done on Vista.

The reviewers did not limit themselves to testing 45nm at nominal frequencies, but added to Deneb and Agena (Phenom X4 9650), operating at 2.3GHz, another rival in the face of an overclocked 45nm AMD CPU. Immediately, we note that overclocking can become the key to the future popularity of such products in the near future, because at a frequency of 3.2 GHz, the results of the engineering chip look very attractive.

Below are the results of test processors in the following applications: POV-Ray 3.7; MainConcept H.264 Encoder; 3D Mark Vantage (CPU test); Crysis.

As you can see, at the same frequency, the L3 cache gives a noticeable advantage only in Crysis, in other tests the gap is smaller. Overclocking immediately raises performance to another level. It remains to wait for Deneb to enter the market and their prices, which will be decisive.
