MIT researchers find a way to more efficiently use the energy of the sun

Information appeared on the MIT TechTV and MIT websites that researchers from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found a way to more
efficient handling of solar energy.

Until today, solar energy has been a source of electricity for various
devices only in the daytime, and its “canning” is expensive and
ineffective process, however, according to researchers from
MIT, they managed to find a simple but effective and cheap
a way to use this energy not only during the day but also at night.

Daniel Nocera, MIT Professor
says that the discovery can become the very “energy nirvana”, about
which scientists all over the world say only, dreaming of “taming the energy of the Sun”.

The method developed by Nocera and his colleagues will allow splitting water into two
gas: oxygen and hydrogen, which can then be used in fuel
cells. This will provide access to non-carbon-based energy like incineration
fossil resources, but to a cleaner and more environmentally friendly, moreover, not
only during the day, but also at night, when direct sunlight is used
it is impossible.

The key component of the discovery is the catalyst found for the process,
which helps to separate water into components, more precisely, two: one accelerates
obtaining oxygen, the other – hydrogen. The first consists of an electrode coated with cobalt phosphate
and placed
in water. The transmission of electricity received from any
source (solar battery or wind turbine), begins the process of obtaining oxygen.

Combined with
a second catalyst, such as, for example, platinum, which allows
generate hydrogen from water, the system can become an artificial analog
photosynthesis. The process can be successfully carried out at room temperature, in
neutral pH medium (water). Nocera recalled that the Sun is the most powerful
source of energy for humanity – in one hour, the Earth receives so much
its energy, how much the entire planet spends in a year.

Colleagues of Noser and his
assistants call this discovery a big step towards obtaining a clean
energy, which will also help to protect the Earth’s climate from the
changes due to carbon dioxide emissions.

However, commercial
development will not be operational as soon as we would like, Nocera hopes,
that in 10 years any homeowner will be able to use the principle,
developed in his laboratory to provide his home with energy – during the day
by means of solar cells, and at night – stored in fuel cells.
