Canon offers fuel cell power not only for DSLRs, but also for other system components
The source discovered that Canon has filed a patent application (US 2021/0180565) that describes a method for powering a digital SLR camera from fuel cells.
Interestingly, in the development of Canon, fuel cells are proposed to be used not only to power the electronics of the device itself, but also to power external components such as lenses and flashes.
The method described in the application involves equipping the system components with their own fuel cells – in other words, the fuel cells can be located both in the chamber body and in the devices attached to it.
With the ubiquitous switch to fuel cells, Canon expects to completely eliminate AA batteries from the photographer’s bag.
The application also says that total charge control and power management are centralized, which simplifies the use of equipment and increases its energy efficiency.
Sounds beautiful, it remains to wait for the appearance of finished products in the retail network. In the meantime, you can recall the efforts in this area of another company. In late February, MTI MicroFuel Cells, a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology Incorporated, unveiled a prototype digital camera power supply that uses a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) fuel cell.
By the way, according to reports, MTI Micro is working closely with an “unnamed Japanese digital camera developer”, which expects to use the Mobion fuel cell technology, created by MTI MicroFuel Cells in its products. Given Canon’s interest in fuel cells, it’s pretty safe to guess who this “unnamed Japanese developer” is
