Conductors of the future: carbon is better than copper
The generally accepted point of view among specialists is that a high-quality replacement of copper in the internal connections of microcircuits should appear in the next 5-10 years. Only then can the industry follow Moore’s Law. Using computer simulations, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic tried to compare the capabilities of copper nanowires and carbon nanotubes as internal connections in microcircuits.
The results of the work can be decisive for the semiconductor industry in the coming years. The switch to nanotubes, it is argued, will eliminate the bottleneck – copper conductors, limiting the potential of microcircuits widely used in electronic devices: from a personal computer to a portable player. The resistance of carbon nanotubes turned out to be less than that of copper nanowires, which makes nanotubes a more suitable material for internal connections.
According to scientists, given the nanoscale of internal connections, quantum phenomena come into play, which are not obvious and invisible at the macro level. Empirical and semiclassical laws cannot take into account the phenomena that take place at the level of atoms and smaller particles. As a result, simulations using appropriate models do not accurately predict the behavior and characteristics of copper nanowires. The use of quantum mechanics complicates matters, but opens up the possibility of creating a more accurate model. The peculiarity of the work carried out lies in the fact that scientists for the first time used a quantum mechanical model, and not empirical laws. Model calculation was entrusted to the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations, which has the most powerful university supercomputer in the world.
