ABBYY FineReader 9.0 gets support for Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Thai
ABBYY introduced an enhanced version of the ABBYY FineReader 9 optical character recognition system.0 with support for Hebrew, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Thai. OCR now supports 184 languages - European, Asian, African and Middle Eastern. Including in ABBYY FineReader 9.0 additional languages will expand the user audience of the system by 2 billion people.
“Support for these languages is an important technological stage in the development of ABBYY FineReader 9.0, for the implementation of which we had to solve a number of non-trivial tasks “, – comments Sergey Popov, Director of the Department of OCR Products at ABBYY.
In Thai documents, words are written in one piece, without spaces, and letters and diacritics can be located in a line at four different levels. In Hebrew, the “reverse” direction of writing is used (from right to left), but in cases where words in foreign languages come across in the text, they are written from left to right. The Chinese language has two spellings – simplified and traditional, and the characters themselves have several spellings.
ABBYY FineReader 9.0 recognizes 10 thousand hieroglyphs, while in the work on the base we used several million variations of hieroglyphs. Due to the fact that we improve our own recognition technologies, and do not license third-party developments, this allows us to achieve high quality recognition even when working with such complex languages as Hebrew, Chinese, Thai and Japanese. Updated ABBYY FineReader 9.0. – this is the result of a colossal, almost ten-year work of a large team. This is a project in which, in addition to our specialists, native speakers of the respective languages were involved, ”continues Sergey Popov.
During comparative tests, the new version of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 has demonstrated a higher recognition quality compared to similar systems from other manufacturers. Thus, the quality of Chinese language recognition in ABBYY FineReader 9.0 surpasses the indicators of the closest analogues by an average of 35-40% (simplified and traditional spelling, respectively), and Hebrew – by 60%.
The mechanism for intelligent detection of the recognition language allows ABBYY FineReader 9.0 successfully handle extremely complex documents containing a combination of alphabetic and hieroglyphic languages such as Chinese and English. In addition to recognizing additional languages, the new version of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 significantly increased the launch speed of the application, and also added the ability to select Chinese as the interface language.
Among the new features of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 – recognition of text with horizontal and vertical orientation and the ability to select the option of hieroglyph recognition from the list of hypotheses.
“With the development of economic cooperation with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, the business community was faced with the task of organizing effective work with documents in the respective languages,” explains David Yang, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Founder of ABBYY. – “Expansion of language support in ABBYY FineReader 9.0 will allow us to meet the significant demand for high-quality document recognition, which we are already seeing in the countries of Southeast Asia and the Middle East “.
A version of the product with support for new languages is currently available in the ABBYY online store. Registered users of ABBYY FineReader 9.0 will be able to install the system update for free.
