Kaspersky Lab Malware Rating – July 2021
Starting in July 2021, Kaspersky Lab will change the methodology for preparing monthly virus activity reports. Previously used methods of assessing current threats, based on the analysis of mail traffic and the results of the online scanner on the company’s website, can no longer adequately reflect the extremely dynamic change in the situation with virus threats. In particular, email is not the main channel for the distribution of malicious programs, and according to our observations, the share of malicious traffic in relation to the total number of emails is now tenths of a percent.
Old methods are replaced by new ones. It will be based on the results of the work of Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) – a new technology implemented in personal products version 2021. This technology will not only allow Kaspersky Lab to receive information about virus threats online and track their development, but will also significantly speed up the detection of new unknown threats and provide users with protection against them.
It should be noted that by the end of July 2021, personal products of the 2021 version had not yet been officially introduced in some countries, for example, in Russia and the United States. Thus, this review objectively reflects the current situation in most countries of Europe and Asia. However, in the near future, data received from users from the rest of the world will be added to the reviews.
As a result of the work of KSN in July 2021, two viral twenty were obtained.
The first is a ranking of the most widespread malware, adware, and potentially dangerous programs by the number of computers on which they were detected (in percent):
Since the proposed rating is based only on data from the first month of the system’s operation, it is extremely difficult to make any forecasts based on it and talk about the dynamics of changes. Kaspersky Lab promises that in the next months such an opportunity will appear.
However, it is already possible to categorize all the malicious and potentially dangerous programs in the top twenty among the main classes – TrojWare, VirWare, AdWare and Other Malware. It can be seen that most often user computers become the target of attacks of all kinds of Trojans.
A total of 20,704 unique malicious, adware and potentially dangerous programs were recorded on users’ computers in July. It is precisely this number of unique detected programs – about 20,000 – that, according to Kaspersky Lab, forms the “in-the-wild” environment.
The second twenty presents data on which malicious programs are most often infected with infected objects detected on users’ computers (as a percentage of the total number of infected objects).
This top twenty contains mainly various malicious programs that can infect files. This data is interesting as an indicator of the most common threats that require disinfection rather than simple deletion of infected objects.
It is noteworthy that the GetCodec program is in the top twenty.d is a unique example of a worm that infects audio files. It can be seen that this family of malicious programs is very actively spreading on user computers.
Data on changes in positions and shares of all malicious, adware and potentially dangerous programs will be presented in the report for August.
