Intel Xeon processors get new E0 stepping and lower TDP
While desktop quad-core Intel Yorkfield processors have been using C1 core stepping for a long time, server Harpertowns are based on the older revision C0.
The manufacturer decided to refresh the Xeon line by releasing a CPU on a new stepping, E0. The first solutions on it should leave the coveyer on July 3, and mass deliveries will begin in mid-autumn.
Server boards will require a BIOS update to properly support updated processors. CPUID will change from 0x1067A to 0xA005b013.
The most significant innovation that the new stepping will bring is the fact that the maximum TDP of Intel Xeon processors will be reduced from 150 to 120 W – this is the thermal package that will be typical for the updated flagship model, 3.2 GHz X5482 (now it is 150 W).
The heat dissipation of other models will most likely also be reduced, but this will not affect the official TDP indicator.
