In order to more efficiently and accurately predict climate change on Earth, scientists from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States decided to create a supercomputer consisting of 20 million (!) processor cores. The overall performance of such a monster is estimated at 200 PetaFLOPS, incredible by today’s standards. The fastest supercomputers so far barely exceed half 1 PetaFLOPS.
On paper, a proposal from UC Berkeley and the company
Tensilica looks pretty promising and the peak performance is overwhelming. But will they be able to implement the project?
Researchers believe that the use of configurable RISC Tensilica processors will provide consistent performance of about 10 PetaFLOPS in a very energy efficient mode. Peak power – 200 PetaFLOPS. At the same time, however, the energy consumption will be 4 MW.
The project cost is estimated at $ 75 million.- in general, a considerable amount, but taking into account the chosen approach – the use of a large number of optimized processor cores with low power consumption and high-speed connections is a small cost, since a supercomputer with similar performance, made on the currently used
architectures would cost about $ 1 billion. and devour an impressive 200 MW of energy.
The Tensilica Xtensa LX processors used in this supercomputer are manufactured using 90nm or 130nm process technology and are clocked at 150-450 MHz. Their feature is low power consumption – 0.1 mW per 1 MHz or 45 mW in the worst case – at the maximum CPU frequency.
Researchers believe that with the help of such a productive computer and more advanced and detailed models, they will be able to learn to better understand how the climate of our planet is changing, which may allow them to more accurately make any predictions about its change.
A powerful new supercomputer will allow researchers to work with a model of the cloud system in 1 km steps, which is expected to reveal many new details previously not available with other models and with computers of lower power. To operate with such volumes of data, powerful systems are required – 1000 times more powerful than the most productive today.
Scientists from the University of Colorado (Colorado State University) have developed a new climate model, which will
use researchers at Berkeley. As a result of the joint work of these groups, it was decided that the model is quite viable and the “climate supercomputer” not only has a lifetime title of the concept, but the project can be implemented.
