Hi, I’m having a nightmare trying to install max design from the subscription download. part2 The ‘part one’ file initiates the installation and one would assume everything would work fine. I’ve started up max only to find thing like the viewport canvas on the tools menu ‘missing’ and grey’d out. Why the hell can this be as simple as installing from disk?????

Please can someone explain why this is occurring? do I have to unzip the ‘part 2’ file or something??? Surely not?? ive also noticed things like the help file on the composite install is missing too yet the main max support is all there!?

am I missing a trick here? id like to have a simple install. one file, one click please. Cheers, Will. Message 2 of in reply to: maxwill Ok, first thing is that it IS a single click install. Part1 is the executable, part2 is just more of it – it’s a self-extracting “split archive” – Part2 is extracted automatically. I installed from the same 3 files, without incident, and everything works perfectly known bugs exluded , including the Viewport Canvas, Composite and it’s help. Unless you have a bad download damaged archives, which it should have warned you about during the extraction phase there’s no reason for it not to work.

The install requires Administrator rights preferably THE Administrator and you must run Max at least once as Administrator before running it as a restricted rights user. Disabling any firewall or AV is also recommended during the install and 1st run. See the Installation Problems? iK 4. nVidia GTX 2GB Driver Message 3 of Thanks Steve, I’ll do that.

I assumed it was as you stated but the problems get you thinking abstractly! I have local admin rights on this workstation, this hasn’t been a problem before. I’ll remove it and log back in as the administrator. I’ll keep you posted. All the best, Will. Message 4 of Quick point – there’s no need or shouldn’t be to re-run the Part1 executable – Setup. Message 5 of Thanks, found that. I’ll give it a bash shortly.

so is that the entire installation file? is the ‘part 2’ file part of that then? as per your last mail? Message 6 of Hi, Ive done everything outlined. its works fine under Admin but under my user account i’m missing parts again. I give up. Have requested physical media so can sort later in the week. if that doesnt work i’ll seek further advice. Thanks for your help. Message 7 of Message 8 of Have you tried “run as admin” in, I believe, the properties for the shortcut? Message 9 of What happens if you use the Customize Custom UI and Default Switcher option to load one of the default UI configurations?

Does it bring back the missing UI entries? Message 10 of Ah yes, I copied my ‘maxstart. I’ll delete it and take it from there. I can always load the defaults, mod them and resave them as my ‘maxstart. ui’ think that all makes sense!? I guess I can selectively load things like my quads ui separately. bit annoying though! I think we’re there. Thanks a million all round. Message 11 of This has been a long running issue. You should never load a previous UI, especially during the XBR process, until there is a proper tool to handle merging in data at this time there isn’t one.

What happens is as tools changes, maxscript commands change, etc, the commands used to call them also change. So what was once called by one method no longer is, and by loading an old UI you have removed the new method in favor of the non-existent old method.

My recommendation is to never load UI files from a previous release until there is a tool to help migrate the data. They are great for migrating your UI for a release to another machine, but fail miserably trying to change a new release to match the old one. Message 12 of Hi, I’ve done what I stated in my last post, all starts up without missing parts. However when I load my quads ui through the customize interface, and save as a custom ui scheme I’m back to bits missing from menu’s. Its starting to look like I cant port my ui scheme over from Message 13 of I hear you, I agree, there needs to be a porting utility for this.

My ui tweaks are minimal really but for some this could be a deal breaker for the upgrade! Its never easy, Thanks, all the best, Will. Message 14 of A big thanks again, i had an issue with a permantly absent Graphite modelling toolbar in for probably much the same reason.

Ive deleted the UI’s in my doc’s and setting and its all back online. Nice one!
