Seagate does not believe in SSDs, but is going to release them itself and threatens to sue other manufacturers
As you know, Seagate has plans to release its own solid-state drives (SSD), and the first products are expected to appear this year. Meanwhile, the company has made an unambiguous gesture towards other SSD manufacturers, probably in preparation for the release of their new products.
Citing an interview with Fortune, CEO Bill Watkins, the source claims that Seagate sees violations of its SSD patents by Samsung and Intel. According to the source, an Intel spokesman declined to comment on this information, explaining that his company does not comment on rumors.
Interestingly, Watkins simultaneously drew attention to the fact that SSDs have not yet been able to pave their way to consumers: they are expensive, do not live up to expectations and are still too little represented on the market. However, we recall that this does not prevent Seagate from hatching plans to release its own solid-state drives.
Watkins noted that Seagate and Western Digital own a large number of patents related to the interaction of storage devices and computers. In his opinion, sooner or later, Seagate will definitely go to court. What prevented the company from doing this so far? Perhaps Seagate was waiting for the moment when SSDs would become a real threat to hard drives?
