The Pentagon has allocated money to create an electronic binoculars connected to the brain
According to the source, the US military has allocated 6.7 million. dollars as an upfront investment to develop binoculars that can analyze brain activity and use the data to direct the user’s attention to hazards. The corresponding project was named Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System (CT2WS, “Cognitive Technology Based Hazard Warning System”). Developed by a consortium of academic institutions and manufacturers led by Northrop Grumman.
The plans of the project participants include the creation of a helmet equipped with electrodes that are in contact with the skin of the skull. Thanks to these electrodes, the binoculars will receive feedback from the user’s brain. Expressed in the form of nerve impulses, the subconscious reaction of the user to potential dangers in the field of view will serve as material for learning the algorithms embedded in the electronics of the device. It is expected that this will improve the behavior of the system and adapt it to specific combat conditions.
The customer of the work is DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency – the central research organization of the US Department of Defense, known as the creator of the ARPAnet network, which became the prototype of the Internet). According to information published on the DARPA website, the goal of the project is to create a system capable of detecting enemy personnel and equipment at distances from one to ten kilometers with viewing angles of 120 ° or more.
The first phase of the project is designed for one year and will be devoted to preliminary research, after which DARPA may renew the contract for the creation of subsystems and the final prototype. According to one of the project participants, a prototype can be ready in three years, and a commercial product in five years.
